Monaci delle Terre Nere, Sicily, Italy

Sicily mansion

At the bottom of the Mount Etna, bordered on the same-name national park, there stands villa Monaci delle Terre Nere, surrounded by the citrus and jasmine aroma carried by the Mediterranean breeze. Its history goes back to the XIX century; however, now it’s a modern hotel. The owner of Monaci delle Terre Nere – Guido Alessandro Coffa – decided to preserve a historical value of the architecture and Sicily traditions. That’s how this delicate combination of the remote eras was shaped.

A noble origin of the mansion’s exterior contrasts perfectly against a modern swimming-pool and well-groomed lawn. Surrounding terraces serve as a place for dining, romantic evenings and watching the sunset. The roof of the located nearby building made of lava rocks is protecting the winepress, previously used for wine-making purposes. Nowadays that winepress is just a decor among the scattered tables of the restaurant serving food during the winter time.

In the midst of the gardens, clementine and olive groves, in the shade of sprawling oaks, buildings that serve as a temporary home and a vacation spot were constructed and some of them reconstructed. The mansion offers the total of 19 guestrooms, 6 of which are located in the main building. The rest of them are in the renovated barn, an ancient stone house next to the farm, in the lava rock house and in the newly-built remote house. The design of each room is unique. The walls are decorated with eccentric paintings by half-English and half-Brazilian painter Olivier Mourao, the ceilings are decorated with frescoes echoing the history. Some of them have fireplaces, others have private patios and terraces. A modern furniture neighbours the antique cradle of artists, while some of the interior details belong to the private collection of Guido Coffa.

Another focus falls on the environmental culture presented through construction technologies and rational consumption of renewable energy resources. Also, the huge farm grows ecologically clean fruit and vegetables, herbs, olives, and grapes used for cooking meals served to the hotel guests.

Every little thing touched by a human hand and the nature surrounding the mansion Monaci delle Terre Nere – everything here is meant to create a sense of serenity.
