Monaci delle Terre Nere, Sicily, Italy

Sicily mansion

At the bottom of the Mount Etna, bordered on the same-name national park, there stands villa Monaci delle Terre Nere, surrounded by the aroma of the citrus and jasmine carried by the Mediterranean breeze. Its history goes back to the XIX century; however, now it’s a modern hotel. The owner of Monaci delle Terre Nere – Guido Alessandro Coffa – decided to preserve a historical value of the architecture and traditions of Sicily. That’s how this delicate combination of remote eras was shaped.

A noble origin of the mansion’s exterior contrasts perfectly against a modern swimming-pool and well-groomed lawn. Surrounding terraces serve as a place for dining, romantic evenings and watching the sunset. The roof of the located nearby building made of lava rocks is protecting the winepress, previously used for wine-making purposes. Nowadays that winepress is just a decor among scattered tables of the restaurant serving food during the winter time.

In the midst of gardens, clementine and olive groves, in the shade of sprawling oaks, buildings that serve as a temporary home and a vacation spot have been constructed (and some of them reconstructed). The mansion offers the total of 19 guestrooms, 6 of which are located in the main building, the rest of them – in the renovated barn, an ancient stone house next to the farm, in lava rock house and in the newly-built way off alone house. The design of each room is unique. The walls are decorated with eccentric paintings by half-English and half-Brazilian painter Olivier Mourao; ceilings – with frescoes echoing the history. Some of them have fireplaces; others contain private patios and terraces. A modern furniture neighbors the antique nest of drawers, while some of the interior details belong to the private collection of Guido Coffa.

Another accent falls onto the environmental culture presented through construction technologies and rational consumption of renewable energy sources. Also, a massive farm grows ecologically clean fruits and vegetables, herbs, olive trees, and grapevines used for cooking meals being served to the hotel guests.

Everything there is meant to create a sense of peace: every little thing that a human hand touched, and the nature surrounding the mansion Monaci delle Terre Nere.
