Svart, Norway

The Future is in The Arctic Circle

The collaboration between companies Snøhetta, Entra, Skanska, ZERO Emission Resource Organization and Asplan Viak has established a goal to create the green future and labeled it as «Powerhouse». There is an important message behind the name! Powerhouse is the construction standard when buildings are energy positive. Such buildings in the course of a 60-year period generates more renewable energy than the total amount of energy that would be required to sustain daily operations and to build, produce materials and demolish the building.

Here and now we meet the global change challenge and such projects could show us the right direction. And show us that our homes, hotels and different kinds of buildings can become a solution to the energy problem rather than its generator.

The «Svart» hotel is the first one designed according to the energy positive Powerhouse standard located above the Polar Circle. The hotel is planned to open in 2021 and will be located by the foot of the Svartisen glacier, in the northen part of Norway. This remote spot will only be accessible with a land by an energy neutral boat shuttle from the Bodø town. Some forms of the hotel were inspired by local coastal building traditions. Fishermen put up A-shaped  wooden fish dryers (norway «fiskehjell») as you can see in the concept. And the placing of the hotel was inspired by fisherman houses (norway «rorbu»), part of the house was always above the water to have a fast access to the boats.

To meet Powerhouse standards architects used several cutting-edge design choices. And all spaces like rooms, restaurants terraces are strategically placed to take advantage of the Sun’s energy. So during summer period all places which need shade will have it and at the same time during the winter period natural lightning will be enough. This way we can decrease electricity consumption for room lighting and cooling while at the same time the privacy is ensured. Heating will be implemented using solar and earth energy as well. Low embodied energy materials are planned to be used in the construction. Such kinds of materials as concrete and steel are cut down on. By way of contrast, the hotel will reach only 15% of standard energy use.

On the waterfront of Holandsfjorden fjord you will have a possibility to enjoy the natural beauty and the fauna and flora of the site with clear understanding of minimal environmental footprint on this beautiful northern nature. To create a sustainable tourist destination respecting the unique features of the plot is our mission, says Founding Partner at Snøhetta, Kjetil Trædal Thorsen.
